A Goldie Weekend
I very recently finished Goldie Hawn's autobiography, A Lotus Grows in the Mud. I've been a fan of Goldie since I was a little girl, watching her in Laugh-In on Nick at Nite and thinking she was so beautiful, and so funny.
Her autobiography woke up a real need for me to watch/re-watch some of her movies, so I decided to see how many the library had. Not enough for my taste, but there were three I'd never seen, so I sat down this weekend to watch them.
I started with the greatest Goldie film of all time, Overboard, and moved backwards down the time table from there.

Bloglet: Desperate Housewives
I don't much care for Desperate Housewives.
The cast is fantastic, mind you. Terri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Doug Savant. Even Marcia Cross, who I adore from Melrose Place, when she was insane Kimberly. But I am not a housewife, no matter how desperate I am, and these people's lives are as interesting to me as the grass growing beneath their feet.
The first episode I watched was the first episode Nathan Fillion was in. After he ceased to be on the show, I didn't need to watch anymore.
Then Julie Benz had to go and get a role on it. Dammit all to hell.
So, I watched her five episode arc. And truth be told, I was mostly annoyed by it.
Julie is gorgeous on the show. They give her beautiful vibrant colors to wear, and her hair is perfection. Her character, however is completely pointless. It would appear she was brought on the show for one reason only.
To attract the horny male demographic.
The character was brought on for good reasons. Stripper with a heart of gold, trying to make a better life for herself. Sure. That's awesome. They put her in some trashy clothes (well, as trashy as ABC will let them get away with), but it got better.
Then it veered off course. I'm talking about the french toast scene, which I just accidentally deleted the images of. But really, you don't need it. It's probably for the best.
They hooked her and Katherine up, and it seemingly made no sense. I understand being attracted to another woman, but the time between initial crush and running away to nowhere together was, what, two days? And Julie is all lovey dovey and "Hi, honey" and it was just weird. There wasn't any gradual build up to the moment, and it struck such a false chord, I can't help but wonder how this show could've won awards. Who thinks this is good, or accurate? It's not even a decent guilty pleasure.
Julie may not be one of my all-time favorite actresses, but she's got talent. And the talent was wasted here. It was a throw-away story arc, and she deserved better.
Ask me again why I don't watch Desperate Housewives.

Spreading the Drones
This weekend, I had the immense pleasure of flying to Florida to attend the Florida Film Festival, and see Amber Benson and Adam Busch's new movie, Drones.
Prepare yourselves. This will be the first time I attempt to do a review with absolutely no spoilers. This is an exercise in self control that I don't have.
I will also put my thoughts on meeting Amber Benson, and one of the stars of the movie, Samm Levine, at the bottom of this entry, so that those who are so inclined may skip the personal junk. There are also pictures from the Q&A, and Amber and Samm with another cast member, towards the bottom.

King of the Looney Bin
Bones was about 5 or 6 episodes into its fourth season when I stopped having cable access. More accurately, when I stopped having a DVR to tell me when the show was on. I also didn't have internet, so it went the way of all my other beloved shows. Two seasons behind.
I knew it was only a matter of time until I got caught up (yes, it took mid-season 5 for me to do so). But I was such a spoiler fiend during Buffy's run that I'm quite adept at avoiding spoilers. I wasn't worried at all.
What's that? Boreanaz is on Craig Ferguson? I LOVE Boreanaz! I love Craig Ferguson! What could POSSIBLY GO WRONG?
If it's not totally apparent? I am a dumbass. Natural blonde, in fact. The red hair dye only adds so much artificial intelligence.

And loving it
As I've mentioned countless times, I was a Nick at Nite baby. I was born in 1982, the year Nick, Jr premiered. But I was far more interested in the shows at night than in the morning. (Though if you quiz me, you'll find Pinwheel and Today's Special were my favorite children's programs.)
The shows I loved the most were Laugh-In and The Best of Saturday Night Live. That was the original cast, including John Belushi and Dan Akroyd. But I also truly loved and adored Get Smart.

It's a backwards kind of day
When the movie Ponyo first came out in theaters, I knew literally nothing about it. My friend Lixie mentioned on Twitter she and her husband were going to see it. I blinked once, twice, and let it pass. What the hell is Ponyo?
So when it came up on my library's new movies list, I requested it just for the hell of it. If Lixie liked it, I was willing to give it a try. Even then, I waited until the day before it was due back at the library to watch it. I chose to watch some seriously crappy fare instead. I am kind of an idiot.
